About Roy Sievers

1963 Topps #283, a third-series card, belongs to the last season in which Sievers was an everyday first baseman. A Jim Maloney fastball fractured a rib in spring training and he never fully got going: .240 with 19 home runs and 82 RBI in 138 games, 126 of them at first base for the Phillies, which ended a run of nine straight seasons with 20 or more home runs. The showpiece came on June 19 in Philadelphia, when he finished off the Mets with a two-run walk-off homer against Roger Craig for a 2-1 win - the 300th home run of his career.

Roy Sievers was a right-handed slugging first baseman and left fielder from St. Louis who broke in with the St. Louis Browns in 1949 and won the first American League Rookie of the Year award, batting .306 with 16 home runs and 91 RBI. A shoulder he wrecked in the minors in 1951 nearly finished him; surgery at Johns Hopkins and a shift to first base saved the career. Baltimore traded him to the Washington Senators for Gil Coan in February 1954, before he ever played a game for the Orioles, and he became the best bat on a chronically bad club. His signature year was 1957: he led the American League in home runs (42), RBI (114) and total bases (331) while hitting .301, and finished third in the MVP vote. He made the American League All-Star team in four seasons: 1956, 1957, 1959 and 1961. Chicago, Philadelphia and the expansion Senators carried him to 318 home runs, 1,703 hits and 1,147 RBI over 17 seasons. He later coached for the Cincinnati Reds, managed in the minor leagues, and was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame and the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame.
