1963 Topps #241 Billy Smith

About Billy Smith
Card 241 in Topps' third series is Bill Smith's only Topps card, a recognized rookie issue that reports his final major-league season: 1962 with the Philadelphia Phillies, where the left-hander pitched in 24 games, five as a starter, and posted a 1-5 record with a 4.29 ERA over 50 and a third innings after coming over from the Cardinals in a trade for catcher Carl Sawatski.
William Garland Smith, a left-handed pitcher born in Washington, D.C., signed originally with the St. Louis Cardinals and spent twelve years as a professional, winning 130 games in the minor leagues with six seasons of ten or more wins. He reached the majors with the Cardinals in September 1958 and pitched briefly for them in 1958 and 1959 before a trade, along with outfielder Bobby Gene Smith, sent him to the Philadelphia Phillies for catcher Carl Sawatski. His best major-league day came on June 28, 1962, at Candlestick Park, when he relieved starter Jim Owens in the second inning and threw seven and two-thirds innings of shutout relief, beating future Hall of Famer Juan Marichal and helping his own cause with an RBI double as the Phillies rallied past the San Francisco Giants, 7-2. Smith closed his three-year major-league career with a 1-6 record and a 4.21 ERA over 32 games. He died in Clinton, Maryland, in 1997.
