1963 Topps #71 Bobby Wine

About Bobby Wine
His rookie card, #71 in the first series of 1963 Topps. Wine had opened 1962 back at Triple-A Buffalo, but by mid-May he was in Philadelphia sharing the shortstop job with Ruben Amaro and filling in at third base. He hit .244 in 311 at-bats over 112 games, the best average he would ever post in the majors, and played 20 games at third without an error. He almost always batted eighth. It was his last year of minor league baseball and the start of a hold on the shortstop job he never quite stopped defending.
Robert Paul "Bobby" Wine, born September 17, 1938, in New York City, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1957 out of Northport High School on Long Island. He debuted in four September games in 1960, went back to Triple-A Buffalo, and returned to stay in 1962. A glove-first shortstop who spent most of his career fending off a rival for the position, Wine won the National League Gold Glove at short in 1963 and led National League shortstops in fielding in 1967. Back trouble cost him most of 1966 and ended his 1968 season in mid-May. The Phillies sent him to the expansion Montreal Expos in April 1969, and he took over at shortstop there once Maury Wills was traded that June. In 1970 he turned 137 double plays, breaking Roy McMillan's single-season record for shortstops and setting a National League mark that still stands. Montreal released him in July 1972. His .215 career average is among the lowest of any major leaguer with 2,500 or more at-bats. He coached the Phillies from 1972 through 1983, including Dallas Green's 1980 World Series champions, managed the Braves on an interim basis in 1985, and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
