The story on this card

1963 Topps #7, National League Pitching Leaders, prints the real 1962 race in print series 1. Don Drysdale topped the league at 25-9 with a 2.83 ERA and a league-leading 232 strikeouts for the Los Angeles Dodgers, taking the Cy Young Award and finishing TSN Player and Pitcher of the Year. Jack Sanford went 24-7 for the San Francisco Giants and led them to the World Series against the Yankees, where he threw a Game 2 shutout. Bob Purkey was 23-5 for Cincinnati, his career year, leading all major-league pitchers with an .821 winning percentage. Joe Jay won 21 games for the Reds a second straight season, going 21-14. Art Mahaffey posted 19 wins as the Phillies climbed to 81-80, a 30-game turnaround from their last-place finish the year before, and Billy O'Dell won 19 for San Francisco as Sanford's rotation-mate. The card lists all six by win total, spotlighting a four-team race for the league's most decisions in a wide-open National League season.

Don Drysdale was the Dodgers' intimidating right-hander for 14 seasons, the 1962 Cy Young winner and a three-time World Series champion who in 1968 ran off six straight shutouts and a record 58 2/3 scoreless innings. Jack Sanford was the Phillies' 1957 National League Rookie of the Year and later the Giants' ace, winning 24 games with 16 straight decisions in 1962 and shutting out the Yankees in Game 2 of that World Series. Bob Purkey - Pittsburgh-born knuckleballer who won 129 games in thirteen seasons for the Pirates, Reds, and Cardinals, peaking at 23-5 for Cincinnati in 1962 and losing a complete-game Game Three of the 1961 World Series. Joey Jay, the first Little Leaguer to reach the majors and one of the original bonus babies, blossomed after a trade to Cincinnati and won 21 games in both 1961 and 1962, pitching the Reds to a pennant. Art Mahaffey - Cincinnati-born right-hander who anchored the Phillies rotation in the early 1960s, twice an All-Star and the author of a 17-strikeout club record, before finishing his career with St. Louis. Billy O'Dell was a Clemson-bred lefty who made two All-Star teams with Baltimore and was named most valuable player of the 1958 game, then won a career-high 19 for the pennant-winning 1962 Giants and started Game 1 of that World Series.
