1963 Topps #282 Bob Del Greco

About Bob Del Greco
Del Greco platooned in center field with Jose Tartabull for Kansas City in 1963 and slumped to .212 over 121 games, with eight home runs and 29 RBIs. His highlight was a pinch-hit three-run homer in the top of the ninth off Don Rudolph on April 26, in a 12-10, 13-inning win over Washington in the first game of a doubleheader. It was his last full big-league season; he spent 1964 in the Milwaukee Braves organization with Triple-A Toronto, where International League managers again voted him the best defensive outfielder. His 1963 Topps card, number 282, is a third-series card showing him with the Athletics.
Robert George "Bobby" Del Greco, born April 7, 1933, in Pittsburgh's Hill District, was an outstanding defensive center fielder who played nine major league seasons for six teams between 1952 and 1965. The youngest of ten children, he quit high school after his father died in 1947 and played semipro ball to support his mother; former Pirates third baseman Pie Traynor signed him to a Pittsburgh contract in 1950, and he reached the majors with his hometown club at 19. He went on to play for the Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Kansas City Athletics, finishing with a .229 batting average, 42 home runs and 169 RBIs in 731 games. His instincts and range made him a prize everywhere he went - International League managers repeatedly voted him the league's best defensive outfielder with the best throwing arm during his Triple-A stops - but the bat never caught up, and he shuttled between the majors and the minors for most of his career. His glove helped decide the tight 1956 National League pennant race while he was with St. Louis. He drove a delivery truck for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette into the 1990s, died October 13, 2019, and was inducted posthumously into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
