About Jerry Lumpe

Lumpe's lone 1963 Topps card, #256, a series-3 base issue, reports the finest season of his career: a .301 average with a career-high 193 hits, second in the American League, plus 34 doubles, ten home runs and 83 RBI over 156 games for Kansas City in 1962. That year also put him on the American League MVP ballot, where he finished 25th.

Jerry Dean Lumpe (born June 2, 1933, in Lincoln, Missouri; died August 15, 2014, in Springfield, Missouri) was a left-handed-hitting infielder who played 12 major-league seasons, 1956-1967, for the New York Yankees, Kansas City Athletics and Detroit Tigers. He came up as a shortstop and third baseman, started three games at third base in each of the Yankees' 1957 and 1958 World Series, and took a ring when New York beat Milwaukee in 1958. A May 26, 1959, trade to Kansas City, which sent him with Johnny Kucks and Tom Sturdivant for Ralph Terry and Hector Lopez, finally handed him a regular job; by 1960 he was the Athletics' everyday second baseman, and his best hitting followed. He moved to Detroit in the five-player deal that sent Rocky Colavito to Kansas City, held the Tigers' second-base job through the mid-1960s and was an American League All-Star in 1964. Released in October 1967, he retired with a .268 average, 1,314 hits and 47 home runs in 1,371 games, coached first base for the 1971 Oakland Athletics, later worked in banking and insurance, and entered the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
