About Galen Cisco

Card #93 is Cisco's first Topps card as a Met, a first-series issue reporting a 1962 season split between two clubs. He was 4-7 with a 6.72 ERA in 23 games for the Red Sox, including a July 27 outing in which Pinky Higgins left him on the mound for 16 hits and 13 runs against Washington, before Boston put him on waivers and New York claimed him in early September. In four late-season appearances he went 1-1 for the Mets, the win a four-hitter at the Polo Grounds on September 21 that beat the Cubs 4-1, with five walks and eight strikeouts.

Galen Cisco was a right-handed pitcher who worked seven major-league seasons (1961-1965, 1967, 1969) after starring at Ohio State University, where he captained the Buckeyes' 1957 national championship football team and compiled a 12-2 record on the mound. Red Sox scout Denny Galehouse signed him in 1958, and he reached the majors in June 1961, pitching for Boston, the expansion-era New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals and finishing 25-56 with a 4.56 ERA in 192 games, 78 of them starts. His heaviest workloads came with the Mets, whose manager Casey Stengel nicknamed him "Ohio State." Cisco then built a far longer second career as a pitching coach, working nearly three decades in that job for the Royals, Expos, Padres, Blue Jays and Phillies. He ran the staff for Toronto's back-to-back World Series winners in 1992 and 1993, with Jimmy Key, Jack Morris and Duane Ward among the arms he handled there. Ohio State inducted him into its Varsity Hall of Fame in 1995.
