About Larry Burright

Card #174, a series-2 issue, lists Burright with the New York Mets. Los Angeles had shipped him and Tim Harkness east on December 1, 1962 for Bob L. Miller, the right-hander who lost his first twelve decisions of 1962 and finished 1-12 for New York. Burright never won a regular job again: he hit .220 with no home runs in 41 games as rookie Ron Hunt claimed second base, spent much of the summer at Buffalo, and the club around him lost 111 games and finished tenth.

Larry Allen Burright (July 10, 1937 - October 14, 2025) was a right-handed-hitting second baseman, born in Roseville, Illinois and raised in Alhambra, California. He attended Mark Keppel High School and Fullerton College, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1957, and spent five seasons in the farm system before reaching Los Angeles on April 12, 1962. He picked up the nickname 'Possum' for a habit of standing around smiling without saying much. His one year as a regular ended badly on both counts: a .205 average, and a ninth-inning error in the deciding game of the 1962 pennant playoff that helped San Francisco come back to beat the Dodgers 6-4 and take the flag. Traded that winter, he was finished in the majors after seven hitless at-bats in 1964 and retired in 1965 at twenty-eight, with eight minor-league seasons behind him. His career line reads 159 games, 73 hits, a .205 average, 4 home runs, 33 RBIs and 44 runs scored. He died at eighty-eight in Glendora, California.
