1963 Topps #173 Bomber's Best
On this card: Tom Tresh, Mickey Mantle, Bobby Richardson
Some references note a printing difference on this card - a bat knob visible between Mantle's legs on some copies and not on others - that PSA does not split; this checklist tracks one card.

About this card
This is one of the eleven combination cards in the 1963 Topps set (#18, 43, 68, 138, 173, 218, 242, 306, 331, 392, 412), each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The story on this card
Topps ran a handful of combination cards through the 1963 set, and #173 is the Yankee one: Tom Tresh, Mickey Mantle and Bobby Richardson posed together, bats crossed. The banner reads Bomber's Best, a nod to the Bronx Bombers, and off the 1962 season these three were the club's best - the American League Rookie of the Year, the American League Most Valuable Player, and the second baseman who caught Willie McCovey's line drive for the final out of the World Series, won by New York over San Francisco in seven games. It is a second-series card. One checklist catalogues a printing difference - a bat knob visible between Mantle's legs on some copies and not on others - but PSA does not split it, so this checklist tracks a single card.
Tom Tresh was the Yankees' switch-hitting jack-of-all-trades: the 1962 American League Rookie of the Year at shortstop, the man whose eighth-inning homer turned Game Five that October, and a Gold Glove outfielder who later took turns at third base and back at short. Mickey Mantle was the Yankees' switch-hitting center fielder across 18 seasons, a Triple Crown winner, three-time American League Most Valuable Player and seven-time World Series champion who hit 536 home runs on ruined legs. Bobby Richardson - Yankees second baseman from 1955 to 1966, a five-time Gold Glove winner and eight-time All-Star who hit atop the lineup, almost never struck out, and saved his best work for October.
