The story on this card
This World Series subset card recaps Game 1 of the 1962 Fall Classic, played October 4 at Candlestick Park, the first coast-to-coast Series in history. Yankees left-hander Whitey Ford started against the Giants' Billy O'Dell before a sellout crowd of 43,852. Roger Maris's first-inning double staked New York to an early lead; the Giants tied it in the third, but Clete Boyer's seventh-inning home run put the Yankees back ahead for good in a 6-2 win. Ford went the distance, earning a record 10th World Series win, an outing that also ended his own record streak of consecutive scoreless Series innings. No. 142 in the 1963 Topps set, part of the numbered World Series highlights subset, issued in print series 2. The front pictures Ford.
