About Bob Buhl

Card #175, a second-series issue, follows Buhl's first year in Chicago. One April appearance as a Brave cost him five runs in two innings; everything after that belonged to the Cubs, where he went 12-13 over 212 innings and led a 59-103, ninth-place staff in wins as its oldest starter by seven years. The season is better remembered for his bat. He batted 70 times in 1962 without a hit, part of an 0-for-87 skid spread over three years and the worst single-season batting performance in major league history.

Bob Buhl signed with the Chicago White Sox out of a 1946 tryout camp in his hometown of Saginaw, Michigan, but Commissioner Happy Chandler granted him free agency in February 1948 because the deal came before he had graduated from high school, and he signed with the Boston Braves organization instead. Army paratrooper duty in 1951-52 delayed him further; he debuted on April 17, 1953. Over fifteen seasons he went 166-132 with a 3.55 ERA in 2,587 innings for the Braves (1953-1962), Chicago Cubs (1962-1966) and Philadelphia Phillies (1966-1967). He won 18 games in 1956 and 18 again in 1957, when his .720 winning percentage led the National League and Milwaukee won the only World Series title of its Braves era. He earned the nickname Dodger Killer by beating Brooklyn in five straight starts in 1956. At the plate he was hopeless: no home runs in 857 career at-bats and a .089 average. He settled in Mio, Michigan, coached high school ball at Hillman in the 1970s, and died in Titusville, Florida on February 16, 2001.
