1963 Topps #193 Andre Rodgers

About Andre Rodgers
Topps' 1963 card #193, a series-2 issue, catches Rodgers at his peak: .278 with 128 hits in 138 games in 1962, the year Ernie Banks moved across to first base and handed him the shortstop job outright. Working with rookie second baseman Ken Hubbs, who covered the keystone in 159 games, and Banks at first, Rodgers helped set a league record for double plays - a rare bright spot in a 59-103, ninth-place season.
Kenneth Andre Ian Rodgers was born December 2, 1934, in Nassau, Bahamas, and died there December 13, 2004. A standout cricketer who had never seen a baseball until 1952, he paid his own way to a 1954 New York Giants tryout and landed in their Melbourne, Florida camp under Carl Hubbell. He won the 1955 Northern League batting crown at St. Cloud at .387, then beat out Vada Pinson for the 1958 Pacific Coast League title at Phoenix. Rodgers debuted April 16, 1957, becoming the first Bahamian to play in the integrated major leagues. A 6-foot-3 right-handed shortstop, he played for the New York/San Francisco Giants (1957-1960), Chicago Cubs (1961-1964) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1965-1967), then spent 1969 with Japan's Taiyo Whales. He finished at .249 with 45 home runs and 245 RBIs in 854 games. Back home he ran Rodgers Sports Shop, managed the 1971 national team, and entered the inaugural Bahamas National Sports Hall of Fame class in 1989; Nassau's Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium now carries his name.
