About Glen Hobbie

Hobbie's 1963 Topps card, #212 in the third series, followed the roughest year of his career. He lost six decisions before winning his first game of 1962, a 2-1 verdict over Milwaukee that hung Warren Spahn with his 200th career loss, and finished 5-14 with a 5.22 ERA, giving up 198 hits in 162 innings as a Chicago club bound for 103 losses and ninth place shuttled him between starting and relief. He did field flawlessly, a perfect 1.000 mark that led National League pitchers.

Glen Hobbie was a right-handed pitcher who spent nearly his entire big-league career with the Chicago Cubs. Born in Witt, Illinois, he reached the majors in September 1957, weeks after the Cubs bought his contract from Memphis of the Southern Association for $50,000. The 6-foot-2 Hobbie split 1958 between the rotation and the bullpen, going 10-6 with 16 starts in 55 appearances, then took a regular turn in 1959 and opened that April with the best game of his career, a one-hit 1-0 shutout of St. Louis that was perfect until Stan Musial doubled with two out in the seventh. He won 16 games in both 1959 and 1960, topping 230 innings each year, and in 1960 he also led the National League with 20 losses. A back injury in 1961 altered his follow-through and cost him his fastball, and he never got it back. Chicago traded him to the Cardinals for Lew Burdette on June 2, 1964; his last big-league appearance came seven weeks later and he finished the year in the minors. Over eight seasons he went 62-81 with a 4.20 ERA, 682 strikeouts, 45 complete games and 11 shutouts in 284 games. He later worked as a supervisor for a roller derby association in Litchfield, Illinois, and died in 2013 at 77.
