1963 Topps #196 Doug Camilli

About Doug Camilli
Card #196 rides in the second series, an ordinary middle number. With Norm Sherry sold to the Mets, Los Angeles gave Camilli ten straight starts at the end of June; five singles and one run batted in later, John Roseboro had the job back for good. He finished at .162 in 49 games, then spent the October sweep on the bench, one of six men on the Series roster who never got in.
Douglas Joseph Camilli was born September 22, 1936, in Philadelphia, where his father, first baseman Dolph Camilli, was closing out a season with the Phillies; five years later the elder Camilli was the National League's Most Valuable Player for Brooklyn. The family lived in California, and Doug played three sports at Santa Rosa High School before Stanford coach Jack Shepard turned him into a catcher. He signed with the Brooklyn organization and turned pro in 1957, then reached Los Angeles late in 1960 and singled off Juan Marichal in his first big-league game. Across nine seasons with the Dodgers and Senators he was almost always the backup, first behind John Roseboro in Los Angeles and later behind Paul Casanova in Washington. He caught Sandy Koufax's third no-hitter in 1964, wore a World Series ring from 1963 without ever appearing in a Series game, and finished a .199 hitter with 153 hits, 18 home runs and 80 runs batted in over 313 games. He retired into coaching with Washington in 1968, was activated for one last game in September 1969 when the club ran out of catchers, then spent 1970 through 1992 with the Boston Red Sox as a bullpen coach and later a minor-league manager and roving catching instructor. He died March 17, 2026, at 89.
