About Chuck Estrada

Card #465 went to press in the spring of 1963, months before the elbow gave out, and looks back on a 9-17 year that tied Ed Rakow for the American League lead in losses. Estrada carried a career-high 223 1/3 innings in 1962, struck out 165 and surrendered 24 home runs, and on September 13 he connected for the only home run of his major league life. The card is a semi-high number out of series-6.

Charles Leonard Estrada, a hard-throwing right-hander born February 15, 1938, in San Luis Obispo, California, signed with the Baltimore Orioles on September 27, 1956, out of Atascadero High School and semipro ball with the San Luis Obispo Blues. He reached the majors on April 21, 1960, as part of the young Orioles staff known as the Kiddie Korps, and tied Jim Perry for the American League lead with 18 wins as a rookie, the only pitcher ever to top that league in victories in his first season. He was an All-Star in both of that summer's two games and worked an inning in the first of them, and The Sporting News named him its Pitcher of the Year. Estrada stayed a workhorse starter through 1962, but elbow trouble put him on the operating table in September 1963 and he never regained that form. He pitched briefly for Baltimore through 1964, spent 1965 at Triple-A Rochester, and made his last big-league appearance on June 11, 1967, finishing 50-44 with a 4.07 ERA and 535 strikeouts over seven seasons. He kept throwing in the minors into 1969, then coached into the 1990s, with pitching-coach stints for the Rangers, Padres and Indians.
