1963 Topps #49 Dal Maxvill

About Dal Maxvill
Card #49 is Maxvill's rookie card, a series-1 issue reporting a 1962 season split between Double-A Tulsa, where he hit .348 in 47 games, and St. Louis. Called up in June, he got into 79 games as a utility infielder behind Julio Gotay, the Cardinals' Opening Day shortstop, and batted .222 with one home run and 18 RBI in 189 at-bats. Topps caught him one winter before Dick Groat arrived and pushed him back to the bench.
Charles Dallan Maxvill was born February 18, 1939, in Granite City, Illinois, and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1960 with a degree in electrical engineering, batting .350 as a senior. Cardinals scout Joe Monahan signed him for a $1,000 bonus, and he reached the majors on June 10, 1962. Across fourteen seasons (1962-1975) with St. Louis, Oakland and Pittsburgh he was valued almost entirely for his glove, finishing at .217 with six home runs in 1,423 games. He became the Cardinals' regular shortstop in 1966 and won the National League Gold Glove there in 1968. He played on four World Series winners: the Cardinals in 1964 and 1967 and the Athletics in 1972 and 1974. After retiring he coached third base for the Mets in 1978 and worked on the Cardinals' and Braves' staffs, then served as St. Louis general manager from February 1985 until September 1994, a tenure that took in National League pennants in 1985 and 1987.
