About Ray Washburn

Washburn opened 1963 looking like a future ace, shutting out the Mets on April 10, adding complete-game wins over Pittsburgh and Houston, then blanking the Dodgers 3-0 on three hits on April 27 with a perfect game intact into the seventh. He beat the Cubs on May 2 with a career-high 10 strikeouts to reach 5-0, leading the majors in wins, complete games and strikeouts, before shoulder pain set in; the diagnosis was a torn triceps, and it cost him the rest of the year. He finished 5-3 with a 3.08 ERA in 11 starts. Card #206, a third-series card, came a year after his rookie card.

Ray Clark Washburn (b. May 31, 1938, Pasco, Washington) pitched nine seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals and a tenth with the Cincinnati Reds, finishing 72-64 with a 3.53 ERA and 700 strikeouts in 1,209 2/3 innings. A college basketball standout who always knew baseball was his game, he led Whitworth College to the 1960 NAIA championship, struck out 37 batters in 19 tournament innings and was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player. St. Louis signed him for a $50,000 bonus, brought him up for a look in September 1961, then watched a torn triceps in his pitching shoulder nearly end him in 1963. He came back with a different set of pitches, took home World Series rings with the 1964 and 1967 Cardinals, and peaked in 1968, when he no-hit the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park. He later taught at Bellevue Community College for three decades, chairing its physical education department, running its athletics and coaching its baseball team for 12 years. He is in the NAIA, Inland Empire and Washington State sports halls of fame, but not the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
