1963 Topps #364 Howie Goss

About Howie Goss
The front still reads Pittsburgh Pirates, a few weeks behind the news: on April 4, 1963 the Pirates shipped Goss and cash to Houston, five days before the Colt .45s opened at home against San Francisco. He was in that Opening Day lineup, batting sixth and playing center field at Colt Stadium, and he held the job all year - 133 games, 411 at-bats, .209 with nine home runs and 44 RBI against 128 strikeouts. September 28 was his last day in the majors. Number 364 is a plain fourth-series card.
Howard Wayne Goss was a right-handed-hitting, right-handed-throwing outfielder, born November 1, 1934 in Wewoka, Oklahoma and schooled at South San Francisco High School in California. Rangy at 6-foot-4 and 204 pounds, he spent nine years in the minor leagues and hit 172 home runs there before he ever made a big-league club. That club was the 1962 Pittsburgh Pirates, where he worked mainly as a late-inning replacement for left fielder Bob Skinner and started 15 games in right field, ground normally patrolled by Roberto Clemente. The following spring Pittsburgh sent Goss and cash to the Houston Colt .45s for a little-known 25-year-old named Manny Mota, who went on to 20 major league seasons and retired as the career pinch-hit leader. Goss took over center field for Houston in 1963, then finished his professional career in the minor leagues in 1964. He retired with 222 major league games, 113 hits, 24 doubles, 11 home runs, 54 RBI and a .216 average. He died July 31, 1996 in Reno, Nevada, at 61.
