About Ken Walters

Card #534 is a high number in the seventh print series of the 1963 Topps set, the kind of card that keeps set builders hunting. It shows him with Cincinnati, where he spent the season as a spare outfielder on Fred Hutchinson's fifth-place club, an 86-76 team best remembered now for Pete Rose's rookie year. Wearing number 21, Walters got into 49 games, 32 of them as a pinch hitter, and hit .187 with one home run and seven RBIs in 75 at-bats. His last big-league game came on September 29, 1963.

Kenneth Rogers Walters was a right-handed outfielder born November 11, 1933 in Fresno, California. He graduated from Fremont High School in Oakland in 1951, and Detroit signed him as an amateur free agent the next year. He spent the rest of the decade in the minors, missing 1954 and 1955 for military service. On December 5, 1959 the Tigers sent him to Philadelphia with Ted Lepcio and minor leaguer Alex Cosmidis for Chico Fernandez and Ray Semproch. Walters debuted for the Phillies on April 12, 1960 against Cincinnati and singled in his first big-league at-bat, then hit .239 with eight home runs in 124 games as a rookie. A reserve in 1961, he was purchased by the Reds on February 9, 1962 and spent that whole season with their Triple-A club in San Diego, hitting .300 with 22 home runs. He came back to Cincinnati in 1963 for one last big-league stint and finished at .231 with 11 home runs and 58 RBI in 259 games. Two more minor league seasons followed before he retired. He died January 26, 2010 in San Ramon, California.
