About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

1964 was Dick Green's first full major-league season, and he took over as Kansas City's starting second baseman, appearing in 130 games. He struggled at the plate into early July but finished strongly, batting .264 with 11 home runs and 37 RBIs, while his glove work at second drew praise from opposing broadcasters. This 1964 Topps card, #466, comes from the set's sixth print series and is a recognized rookie card, shared with fellow Athletics rookie Aurelio Monteagudo as part of a Rookie Stars subset. A steady-handed Kansas City and Oakland second baseman for twelve seasons, valued more for his glove than his bat, who helped anchor three straight Athletics World Series championship teams in the early 1970s.

Monteagudo opened 1964 with the Athletics before being optioned to the Triple-A Dallas Rangers in June, finishing 11 games with Kansas City. This shared Rookie Stars card pairs him with fellow Athletics prospect Dick Green, part of the set's sixth print series and a recognized rookie card for both players. Cuban right-hander who pitched for five big-league clubs across seven seasons, then built a long second career pitching and coaching in the Mexican League and Venezuelan winter ball.
