About Mike Hershberger

Card 465 comes from the sixth series of 1964 Topps, toward the scarcer end of the set. It closes out his first run with the Chicago White Sox. He played 141 games in 1964, 89 in right field and 64 in center, and his average slid to .230 with 104 hits and 31 runs batted in, though he drew 48 walks, the most of his career. On January 20, 1965, Chicago sent him and Jim Landis to the Kansas City Athletics in a three-team deal that brought Rocky Colavito back to Cleveland; pitcher Fred Talbot followed to Kansas City on February 10 as the player to be named.

Norman Michael Hershberger, born October 9, 1939, in Massillon, Ohio, played eleven major-league seasons as a right-handed outfielder for the Chicago White Sox, the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics and the Milwaukee Brewers, closing out his career with a second stint in Chicago in 1971. He graduated from Massillon Washington High School, where he was a Tiger football halfback, and took a football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati before signing with the White Sox in 1959. He reached the majors on September 5, 1961, and was known above all for his defense and for one of the strongest, most accurate outfield arms of his era. He held a starting corner outfield job for seven straight years, 1962 through 1968, split between Chicago and the Athletics. Over 1,150 games he batted .252 with 900 hits, 150 doubles, 22 triples, 26 home runs and 344 runs batted in, striking out only 311 times in 3,572 at-bats. Massillon named him a Distinguished Citizen in 2021. He died in his hometown on July 1, 2012, at 72.
