1964 Topps #464 Dallas Green

About Dallas Green
Dallas Green's 1964 Topps card, #464, sits in the set's sixth series, with the Philadelphia Phillies on the front. It backs his best major league season. Green opened 1963 with seven straight scoreless relief appearances, then moved in and out of the rotation for 14 starts among 40 games, twice throwing complete games in back-to-back turns. On June 23 in New York he served up Jimmy Piersall's 100th career home run, which Piersall celebrated by circling the bases running backward. On September 15 he went the distance to beat Don Drysdale and the eventual World Series champion Dodgers 6-1, and he finished 7-5 with a career-low 3.23 ERA in 120 innings.
Dallas Green pitched parts of eight big league seasons, from 1960 through 1967, for the Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Senators, and New York Mets, finishing 20-22 with a 4.26 ERA and 268 strikeouts in 185 games. A 6-foot-5 right-hander from Newport, Delaware, he starred as a pitcher and right fielder at the University of Delaware, going 6-0 with an 0.88 ERA as a junior in 1955 before Phillies scout Jocko Collins signed him that summer. Arm and shoulder trouble that began at Buffalo in May 1959 followed him the rest of his playing days and kept him from matching his early promise, though he gave the Phillies steady work as a spot starter and long reliever while the club climbed from 47-107 in 1961 to a pennant race in 1964. Local legend in Delaware gave him the nickname Spider for his height and long arms. He became far better known after he stopped pitching, managing the 1980 Phillies to the first World Series title in franchise history and, as Chicago Cubs general manager, building the 1984 club that won the NL East. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame member, though he was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.

It is card #464 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Dallas Green of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Why is #464 harder to find?
It is a series 5-6 card. Cards from the fifth and sixth print series (#371-522) are a step tougher to find than #1-370; availability in 1964 runs in three tiers, not a cliff.
How many cards are in the 1964 Topps Baseball set?
