About Bob Saverine

Saverine's 1964 Topps card, #221 from the third series, catches him at the low point. New Orioles manager Hank Bauer had little use for him: he got into 46 games but came to bat only 34 times, finishing at .147 with no home runs and no RBIs, and he took the field in just 17 of those games, 15 at shortstop and two in center, the outfield job of the previous summer gone. His moment came without a swing. On September 12 he pinch-ran for John Orsino, moved up on a bunt and scored on a Jackie Brandt sacrifice fly for the only run of a game in which Frank Bertaina and Kansas City's Bob Meyer each threw a one-hitter. It was his last big-league action until 1966.

Robert Paul Saverine, born June 2, 1941 in Norwalk, Connecticut, signed with the Baltimore Orioles as an amateur free agent in 1959 for a $70,000 bonus after starring in baseball and basketball at Darien High School. A switch-hitting infielder-outfielder nicknamed Rabbit for his speed, he reached the majors that September as an 18-year-old pinch-runner and came around to score. He led the Appalachian League in batting at .353 as a rookie pro and stole 41 bases for Little Rock in 1961, then settled in as the utilityman: three infield positions and two outfield spots. Assigned outright to Triple-A Rochester in 1965 and drafted by Washington out of the Houston organization that November, he spent 1966 and 1967 with the Senators, where he and 6-foot-7 Frank Howard also played on a team basketball squad. Over six major-league seasons and 379 games, Saverine hit .239 with 6 home runs and 23 stolen bases. He retired after a 1968 season at Triple-A Buffalo, then worked roughly two decades as a stockbroker.
