1964 Topps #161 Dave McNally

About Dave McNally
Topps' 1964 solo card #161, a series-2 issue, reports McNally's first extended look at the majors: 7-8 with a 4.58 ERA across 29 games and 125.2 innings for the 1963 Orioles, 20 of those appearances starts, with 78 strikeouts and 55 walks. He opened that season in the bullpen and took a rotation spot for good only in June, when Chuck Estrada's elbow gave out. He was 20 years old for most of it, and the card is the first to show him alone in a Baltimore uniform after the shared rookie issue.
Dave McNally was a left-handed pitcher who spent all but the final season of a fourteen-year career with the Baltimore Orioles, signed out of Billings, Montana in 1960 and debuting September 26, 1962 with a two-hit shutout of Kansas City. He won 20 or more games four straight years, 1968 through 1971; the 1971 Orioles, with Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar and Pat Dobson, remain the last team to field four 20-game winners. A three-time All-Star (1969, 1970, 1972), he clinched the 1966 World Series sweep with a four-hit shutout of the Dodgers and, in 1970, became the only pitcher in major-league history to hit a World Series grand slam, off Cincinnati's Wayne Granger. He finished 184-119 with a 3.24 ERA and 1,512 strikeouts. Retired in June 1975 with the Expos, he lent his name to the grievance arbitrator Peter Seitz decided that December, breaking baseball's reserve clause. Baltimore put him in its team Hall of Fame in 1978; he died of cancer in his native Billings on December 1, 2002.
