1964 Topps #162 Hitting Area - Dick Sisler / Vada Pinson
On this card: Dick Sisler, Vada Pinson

About this card
This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1964 Topps set, each gathering two or more players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The story on this card
Card #162 pairs two Cincinnati Reds men from the same clubhouse. Vada Pinson was coming off a huge 1963: a league-leading 204 hits and 14 triples, a .313 average, and a career-high 106 RBI as the Reds' center fielder, part of a run of five straight seasons with an OPS above .800. Dick Sisler was in the Reds' dugout for a different reason: after his playing days ended in 1953, he joined Cincinnati's coaching staff in 1961 under manager Fred Hutchinson. That role took on new weight partway through the 1964 season, when Hutchinson's illness forced him to step aside and Sisler took over as acting manager, guiding the club to a strong finish. Topps paired the accomplished young outfielder with the Reds' batting coach, the role behind the card's Hitting Area title, on a single print-series-2 card.
Dick Sisler - a journeyman first baseman and outfielder for the Cardinals, Phillies and Reds whose pennant-winning homer for the 1950 Whiz Kids made him a Philadelphia legend. Cincinnati's graceful center fielder and Frank Robinson's running mate, Vada Pinson was a four-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner who reached 200 hits four times and closed an 18-year career with 2,757 hits and 256 home runs.
