1964 Topps #179 Carl Warwick

About Carl Warwick
Topps still had Warwick in a Houston cap on #179 of its 1964 second series, but the picture was already stale: on February 17, 1964, the Colt .45s traded him back to St. Louis for Jim Beauchamp and Chuck Taylor. Cardinals general manager Bing Devine sold the move on flexibility, saying Warwick could start, platoon or be valuable as a pinch hitter, and the bench is where he landed. He got into 88 games, batted .259 in 158 at-bats and delivered 11 pinch hits for a club that chased down the National League pennant on the final day of the season. A late-September fungo off the bat of reliever Ron Taylor fractured his cheekbone.
Carl Wayne Warwick (1937-2025) was a Dallas-born outfielder who batted right-handed and threw left-handed, a combination rare enough that by 1966 he was the only man in the majors listed that way. He played six big-league seasons for the Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Colt .45s, Baltimore Orioles, and Chicago Cubs. Warwick played baseball at Texas Christian University and left after his junior year to sign a bonus contract with the Dodgers, then tore up the minors: Texas League MVP in 1959 at Victoria, where he hit .331 and led the league with 35 home runs, 324 total bases, and 129 runs scored, followed by an American Association all-star season at St. Paul in 1960. He debuted for Los Angeles on April 11, 1961, and was traded to St. Louis that May 30 with Bob Lillis for Daryl Spencer. A 1962 deal made him an everyday outfielder for the expansion Colt .45s, and the Cardinals brought him back in February 1964 as a reserve and pinch hitter. That October he reached base in his first four World Series pinch-hit trips as St. Louis beat the Yankees in seven games. He retired with 363 hits, 31 home runs, and a .248 average, and was elected to the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.
