1964 Topps #256 Johnny Weekly

About Johnny Weekly
He earned it in 1963: a midseason recall from Oklahoma City brought 34 games and a .225 mark, capped September 18 at Crosley Field with a 3-for-5, four-RBI night, a double off Jim Maloney and a two-run ninth-inning drive off Dom Zanni for the last of his five homers. He made the 1964 club out of spring training, went 2-for-15 in six April games, and played his final game on April 23.
John Weekly was a right-handed-hitting outfielder, six feet and 200 pounds, born June 14, 1937 in Waterproof, Louisiana, and a graduate of high school in Pittsburg, California, out on San Francisco Bay. He entered the New York Giants' organization in 1956 and spent six seasons in that chain without a call-up, even after the franchise moved into his own corner of California in 1958. Expansion Houston finally sprang him, taking him from the San Francisco Giants in the Rule 5 draft on November 27, 1961, and he reached the majors with the Colt .45s the following April. Across parts of three seasons, all of them with Houston, he played 53 games and batted .207 with 25 hits, five home runs and 19 runs batted in. He was a corner outfielder only: 19 games in left field, 17 in right, never one in center. Triple-A Oklahoma City was his real address through those years, and 1965 was his last season on the field; Houston traded him to the Mets for Gary Kroll the following January. Weekly died November 24, 1974 at 37, of injuries from a road accident in Walnut Creek, California, and is buried at Oak View Cemetery in Antioch.
