1964 Topps #38 Jim Wynn

About Jim Wynn
Wynn's 1964 Topps #38 rookie card catches him mid-transition: after struggling defensively at shortstop in 1963, he was converted to a full-time outfielder for 1964 and opened the season as Houston's starting center fielder, but was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City in June before a September recall. He finished the year with a .224 average in 67 games for the Colt .45's, his last minor league stint before he became an everyday center fielder in 1965. A series-1 issue.
James Sherman "Jim" Wynn, nicknamed "Toy Cannon" for generating outsized power from a compact frame, spent eleven of his fifteen major league seasons (1963-1977) with the Houston Colt .45's/Astros before two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and a final stretch split among the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers. Converted from shortstop to center field early in his career, he paired plus power with a rare batting eye, leading the majors in walks in 1969. His signature power season came in 1967, when he hit a career-high 37 home runs and drove in 107, earning his first All-Star selection and an 11th-place MVP finish. A three-time All-Star (1967, 1974, 1975), his best all-around year came with the 1974 Dodgers, when he set a career high with 108 RBIs, helped Los Angeles to the National League pennant, and was named The Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year. He is not a Hall of Fame inductee. Career totals: 291 home runs, 964 RBI, 1,105 runs and 225 stolen bases over 1,920 games.
