About Jack Fisher

After one year in San Francisco, Fisher joined the Mets, and card #422 - from series 5 - is his first Topps card as a New Yorker. The back reports his 1963 Giants line: 6-10 with a 4.58 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 36 games, only twelve of them starts, more relief work than Baltimore had ever handed him. With New York he would make at least 38 appearances in each of the next four seasons.

Jack Fisher was a right-handed pitcher from Frostburg, Maryland, who debuted for the Baltimore Orioles on April 14, 1959, at age 20 and pitched eleven seasons for the Orioles, San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds. He finished 86-139 with a 4.06 ERA, 1,017 strikeouts and nine shutouts in 400 games, and his lone winning season was 1960, when he went 12-11 for the young Orioles rotation nicknamed the 'Kiddie Korps.' He is remembered most for three pitches: Ted Williams' 521st and last home run, struck in Williams' final major-league at-bat on September 28, 1960; Roger Maris' 60th on September 26, 1961, which tied Babe Ruth's single-season record; and the first home run hit at Shea Stadium, by Willie Stargell, on April 17, 1964. Fisher led the National League in losses in 1965 and 1967. Hoyt Wilhelm gave him the nickname 'Fat Jack,' which he later hung on his Easton, Pennsylvania restaurant. The Angels released him on Opening Day 1970.

It is card #422 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Jack Fisher of the New York Mets.

Why is #422 harder to find?

It is a series 5-6 card. Cards from the fifth and sixth print series (#371-522) are a step tougher to find than #1-370; availability in 1964 runs in three tiers, not a cliff.

How many cards are in the 1964 Topps Baseball set?
