About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

This is Hinsley's 1964 Topps card, #576, a Mets Rookie Stars card that he shares with Bill Wakefield. It comes from the set's seventh print series, so it is a high number, and it is a recognized rookie card. It captures him in his debut season, the year the Mets carried him as a 19-year-old Rule 5 pick and used him in nine games before sending him to Triple-A. Right-handed pitcher from Hugo, Oklahoma, who debuted with the Mets in 1964 at age 19 as a Rule 5 pick and made a brief return in 1967, finishing with a 7.08 ERA over 20.1 innings.

This card catches Wakefield in his only big-league season, sharing a Rookie Stars slot with fellow Mets righty Jerry Hinsley in the high-number run that closed out the 1964 set. Wakefield made the club that spring after impressing Casey Stengel, then set a Mets record with 62 appearances, working mostly in relief with a 3-5 record, 3.61 ERA and two saves. He started the first night game at Shea Stadium and took the mound in the season's final, pennant-deciding game against the Cardinals, the team that signed him. A one-year Mets right-hander who set a club record with 62 appearances in 1964, thriving in relief for Casey Stengel after a brief, difficult run as a starter.
