1964 Topps #206 Steve Hamilton

About Steve Hamilton
Series-3 card #206 is the first to show Hamilton in pinstripes, and the line behind it is a split 1963: two rough innings still charged to Washington, then 34 relief outings in New York worth a 5-1 record, a 2.60 ERA and five saves. He struck out 63 in 62 1/3 innings that summer, better than a batter an inning. In October he came on for the ninth of the World Series opener and gave up nothing, but Sandy Koufax had already struck out fifteen Yankees that afternoon and the Dodgers swept the thing in four.
Steve Hamilton was born November 30, 1934, in Columbia, Kentucky, and died in Morehead, Kentucky, on December 2, 1997. A 1957 basketball All-American at Morehead State, which reached the NCAA tournament in 1956 and 1957, he went to the Minneapolis Lakers eighth overall, in the second round of the 1958 NBA draft, and lost the 1959 Finals to Boston in two NBA seasons. He pitched twelve major league seasons, 1961-1972, for Cleveland, Washington, the Yankees, the White Sox, San Francisco and the Cubs, chiefly as a left-handed Yankee reliever from 1963 through 1970, finishing 40-31 with a 3.05 ERA and 42 saves and working the 1963 and 1964 World Series. Late in his career he threw the 'Folly Floater,' a high, slow lob in the tradition of Rip Sewell's eephus. He is one of only two men to play in both a World Series and an NBA Finals; Gene Conley is the other. He coached for the Detroit Tigers in 1975, then ran Morehead State baseball for ten seasons and served as the school's athletic director until his death. Morehead State's athletics hall of fame took him in 1985, and he is a Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame member as well.
