About Bill Mazeroski

Series-two card #95 reports a 1964 season of grinding work: 162 games, a .268 average with 10 home runs and 64 RBI, an All-Star selection, a fifth Gold Glove, and 543 assists, the most by any second baseman between 1938 and 1983. The Pirates around him went 80-82 and tied for sixth. The year the card came out went sideways early, as Mazeroski broke a bone in his foot at the end of spring training and did not get into the lineup until May, finishing 1965 with 130 games. Number 95 is an early-series card.

William Stanley Mazeroski spent his entire 17-year career (1956-1972) at second base for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who signed him in 1954 out of high school in Tiltonsville, Ohio. Broadcaster Bob Prince took to calling him simply "The Glove," and the name fit: a ten-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove winner, he turned 1,706 double plays, still the major league career record for a second baseman. He is remembered above all for one swing. Leading off the bottom of the ninth of Game 7 of the 1960 World Series with the score tied 9-9, he drove a Ralph Terry pitch over the left-field wall at Forbes Field to beat the New York Yankees, the only walk-off home run ever to end a World Series in Game 7. He hit .320 in that Series and won the Babe Ruth Award for it. Eleven years later he and Roberto Clemente, the last two men left from the 1960 club, took a second title from Baltimore. Mazeroski coached for the Pirates and the Seattle Mariners, saw his number 9 retired in 1987, and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 2001, chosen for his glove more than his bat. He died February 20, 2026, in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, at 89.
