About this card

Cards #1-12 are the League Leaders subset: twelve cards listing the 1964 leaders in six categories - batting average, home runs, runs batted in, earned run average, pitching and strikeouts - the American League card first and the National League card second in each pair.

The story on this card

This League Leaders card recaps the 1964 National League batting race. Bob Clemente of the Pirates topped the league at .339, his second NL batting crown to that point in his career. Rico Carty of the Braves finished second at .330 in his rookie campaign, a mark that trailed only Clemente among NL hitters. Hank Aaron, Carty's Milwaukee teammate, rounded out the trio at .328. Card #2 sits early in the 1965 Topps set's first series and groups all three men on one design, crediting the Pirates and Braves for the season behind the numbers.

Pittsburgh's right fielder for eighteen seasons, Roberto Clemente won four National League batting titles and twelve straight Gold Gloves, was the 1966 NL Most Valuable Player and the 1971 World Series MVP, and died flying earthquake relief in 1972. Rico Carty, a Dominican-born outfielder, hit .299 over fifteen big-league seasons, capturing the 1970 National League batting title at .366 and helping the Atlanta Braves win their first division championship in 1969. Hank Aaron was the Braves' right fielder and one of the greatest hitters in history, a 25-time All-Star who broke Babe Ruth's home run record in 1974 on his way to 755 career homers.
