About this card

The story on this card
This card recaps the 1964 American League home run race. Harmon Killebrew led the league with 49 homers for the Minnesota Twins, his third straight AL home run title. Boog Powell of the Baltimore Orioles finished second with a career-high 39 homers and also led the AL in slugging percentage. Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees rounded out the trio with 35 home runs. All three were established stars: Killebrew had broken the Twins' single-season home run record twice already, Powell was coming off his best power season yet, and Mantle carried a Triple Crown and multiple MVP awards into the year. The card belongs to Topps' League Leaders subset, which grouped a season's statistical leaders together rather than giving each man his own card.
Harmon Killebrew was the Twins' quiet, powerfully built slugger of the 1960s, a six-time American League home run champion who hit more homers in the decade than anyone else and won the 1969 AL Most Valuable Player award. Boog Powell - huge left-handed slugger who moved from left field to first base and became the power source of Baltimore's four pennant-winning lineups between 1966 and 1971, hitting alongside Frank and Brooks Robinson and taking the 1970 American League MVP Award. Mickey Mantle was the Yankees' switch-hitting center fielder across 18 seasons, a Triple Crown winner, three-time American League Most Valuable Player and seven-time World Series champion who hit 536 home runs on ruined legs.
