About this card

The story on this card
Card 11 in the 1965 Topps set is a League Leaders board saluting the American League's top three strikeout pitchers of 1964. Al Downing of the New York Yankees led with 217 strikeouts, edging Camilo Pascual of the Minnesota Twins (213) and Dean Chance of the Los Angeles Angels (207), who also won the Cy Young Award that season. All three names and clubs appear together on the card face. Downing went 13-8 with a 3.47 ERA over 244 innings for a Yankees team that reached the 1964 World Series; Pascual went 15-12 with a 3.30 ERA for the Twins; Chance turned in a league-leading 20-9 mark with a 1.65 ERA for the Angels, a season that included a franchise-record eleven shutouts. The three pitchers came from three different American League clubs, giving the card a cross-team leaderboard feel.
Al Downing was a hard-throwing Yankees left-hander who led the American League in strikeouts in 1964 and made the 1967 All-Star team, later a 20-game winner for the Dodgers - and forever remembered as the pitcher who gave up Hank Aaron's 715th home run. Camilo Pascual - Cuban right-hander whose overhand curveball, learned from Adolfo Luque, carried him from the worst Senators teams to three straight American League strikeout crowns and back-to-back 20-win seasons for the Minnesota Twins. Dean Chance was the hard-throwing Angels right-hander who won the 1964 Cy Young Award at 20-9 with a 1.65 ERA, then threw a nine-inning no-hitter and a rain-shortened five-inning perfect game for Minnesota in 1967 on his way to Comeback Player of the Year honors.
