The story on this card
Card 10 in the 1965 Topps League Leaders subset recaps the National League's 1964 win column. Larry Jackson topped the league at 24-11 for the Cubs, his best season, edging Juan Marichal (21-8 for the Giants) and Ray Sadecki, who went 20-11 for the pennant-winning Cardinals and started Games One and Four of that year's World Series against the Yankees. All three were established starters at very different points in their careers: Jackson, a veteran who had already pitched eight seasons for St. Louis before the Cubs traded for him; Marichal, in the middle of the most productive stretch of any pitcher in the sport that decade; and Sadecki, only 23 and pitching for the club that had just won it all.
Larry Jackson - durable right-hander for the Cardinals, Cubs and Phillies from 1955 to 1968; a four-time National League All-Star who won 194 games and finished runner-up in the 1964 Cy Young voting. Juan Marichal - the Dominican Dandy's high leg kick fronted the winningest arm of the 1960s: 191 victories in the decade, nine All-Star teams, 243 career wins, and in 1983 the first Hall of Fame plaque ever hung for a Dominican-born player. Ray Sadecki - left-handed pitcher for the Cardinals, Giants and Mets (1960-1977) who won 20 games in St. Louis's 1964 championship season and beat Whitey Ford in Game One of that World Series; 135 career wins, 3.78 ERA.
