About this card

Cards #1-12 are the League Leaders subset: twelve cards listing the 1964 leaders in six categories - batting average, home runs, runs batted in, earned run average, pitching and strikeouts - the American League card first and the National League card second in each pair.

The story on this card

This League Leaders card gathers the American League's top winners from 1964: Dean Chance of the Los Angeles Angels topped the league with 20 victories, a season that also earned him the Cy Young Award; Gary Peters of the Chicago White Sox matched him with 20 wins; Wally Bunker of the Baltimore Orioles won 19 in his rookie season; Juan Pizarro, Peters' own White Sox rotation mate, also reached 19; and Dave Wickersham of the Detroit Tigers rounds out the group. The card lists each man's club beneath his photo, tying the board to the American League's 1964 pitching races.

Dean Chance was the hard-throwing Angels right-hander who won the 1964 Cy Young Award at 20-9 with a 1.65 ERA, then threw a nine-inning no-hitter and a rain-shortened five-inning perfect game for Minnesota in 1967 on his way to Comeback Player of the Year honors. Gary Peters - White Sox lefty who needed seven minor-league seasons and four short call-ups before an emergency start stuck in 1963, the year he led the AL in ERA and won Rookie of the Year; he later tied for the league lead in wins. Wally Bunker was a Baltimore Orioles right-hander whose 19-5 rookie season in 1964 made him an overnight star; arm trouble followed, but he shut out the Dodgers in the 1966 World Series and later threw the first pitch in Kansas City Royals history. Puerto Rican left-hander Juan Pizarro pitched 18 big-league seasons for eight clubs and won 131 games, twice an All-Star in his six years with the Chicago White Sox and a Hall of Famer in his own country. Dave Wickersham - a Kansas City Athletics and Detroit Tigers right-hander who won 19 games for the 1964 Tigers and later became one of only four men to play for both the Athletics and the Royals in Kansas City.
