The story on this card
Howard appeared again in a Topps Rookie Stars subset in 1965, sharing card #41 from the set's first series with infielder Marv Staehle of the White Sox. Howard broke out that year, making 22 starts among 30 appearances, a career high in starts, going 9-8 with a 3.47 ERA over 148 innings for Chicago and establishing himself as a rotation regular. Bruce Howard was a right-handed pitcher who spent six seasons, 1963-1968, with the White Sox, Orioles and Senators, posting a 26-31 record and 3.18 ERA before his son David also reached the majors.
Staehle's 1965 Topps card followed his September 1964 debut with the Chicago White Sox, a brief six-game trial in which he hit .400 in five at-bats. Card #41 sits in the Rookie Stars subset of the set's first print series, a horizontal front that pairs him with Bruce Howard. It is an early-series card, recognized as Staehle's rookie card. He got into seven games for Chicago that summer. Marv Staehle was a light-hitting infielder who broke in with the White Sox in 1964, resurfaced with the expansion Montreal Expos and split second base with Gary Sutherland in 1970, then finished his career with Atlanta in 1971.
