1965 Topps #253 Danny Cater

About Danny Cater
Card #253, a series-3 issue, is Cater's first Topps card as a member of the Chicago White Sox after his move from the Phillies. Cater became a regular in 1965, playing 127 games in the outfield and 11 at third base, and posted career highs in both home runs and RBI: a .270 average with 14 home runs, 55 RBI and 74 runs scored in 142 games.
Danny Anderson Cater was born February 25, 1940, in Austin, Texas, and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies at age 18 in June 1958. He played twelve major league seasons, 1964-1975, for the Phillies, White Sox, Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals, filling in at first base, third base and the outfield. He was the 1968 American League batting runner-up at .290, behind Carl Yastrzemski's .301, the lowest average ever to win a major league batting title, and led American League first basemen with a .995 fielding percentage that year. He set a full-season best of .301 for the 1970 Yankees. Traded to Boston before the 1972 season along with Mario Guerrero for reliever Sparky Lyle, he retired with a .276 average, 1,229 hits, 66 home runs and 519 RBI, and later worked at the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts office in Austin.
