About Mike Hershberger

Card 89 is an early second-series number in 1965 Topps. The team line is the interesting part for collectors: Topps still has him with the Chicago White Sox, even though the three-team Rocky Colavito trade had sent him to the Kansas City Athletics that January. He spent the whole season in Kansas City, and it was the busiest of his career - 150 games, 134 of them in right field, with a .231 average, 114 hits, five triples, five home runs and 48 runs batted in.

Norman Michael Hershberger, born October 9, 1939, in Massillon, Ohio, played eleven major-league seasons as a right-handed outfielder for the Chicago White Sox, the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics and the Milwaukee Brewers, closing out his career with a second stint in Chicago in 1971. He graduated from Massillon Washington High School, where he was a Tiger football halfback, and took a football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati before signing with the White Sox in 1959. He reached the majors on September 5, 1961, and was known above all for his defense and for one of the strongest, most accurate outfield arms of his era. He held a starting corner outfield job for seven straight years, 1962 through 1968, split between Chicago and the Athletics. Over 1,150 games he batted .252 with 900 hits, 150 doubles, 22 triples, 26 home runs and 344 runs batted in, striking out only 311 times in 3,572 at-bats. Massillon named him a Distinguished Citizen in 2021. He died in his hometown on July 1, 2012, at 72.
