About this card

The story on this card
Card 7 in the 1965 Topps set is a League Leaders card recapping the American League ERA race from 1964. Dean Chance of the Los Angeles Angels topped the league at 1.65, the best mark of his career and the number that anchored his Cy Young season, built on 20 wins and 11 shutouts. Joel Horlen of the Chicago White Sox finished second at 1.88, a career-best mark that also led the majors in fewest hits allowed per nine innings that year. The card pairs the two pitchers by category rather than by team, setting an Angels ace against a White Sox ace to show how tight the American League's ERA race ran in 1964.
Dean Chance was the hard-throwing Angels right-hander who won the 1964 Cy Young Award at 20-9 with a 1.65 ERA, then threw a nine-inning no-hitter and a rain-shortened five-inning perfect game for Minnesota in 1967 on his way to Comeback Player of the Year honors. A soft-spoken right-hander from San Antonio, Joel Horlen anchored the Chicago White Sox rotation through the 1960s with a hard curve and a stingy ERA, throwing a 1967 no-hitter for a club that could barely score him a run.
