Nineteen of the twenty clubs have a team card in the 1965 Topps set, each reporting the 1964 season. Houston, renamed from the Colt .45s to the Astros in December 1964, has none; #426 Milwaukee Braves is the franchise's last Milwaukee team card.
The story on this card
Card 293 in the 1965 Topps set is the Los Angeles Angels team card, part of the fourth print series. It reports on the 1964 club, which finished fifth in the American League at 82-80, seventeen games behind the pennant-winning Yankees. The headline arm on that roster was right-hander Dean Chance, who posted a 1.65 ERA and 20 wins to take the American League Cy Young Award and a start in that summer's All-Star Game. Shortstop Jim Fregosi also started for the American League that summer. The card still carries the Los Angeles Angels name; the club would not become the California Angels until September 2, 1965, after this set had already gone to press. The card follows the set's standard team-card format: a posed team photo, with the club's pennant and its fifth-place finish printed below.
