1965 Topps #292 Larry Yellen

About Larry Yellen
By the time Topps issued its 1965 set, Larry Yellen's club had been renamed the Houston Astros, and card #292 pictures him under that new identity from the fourth print series, since his rookie card had already come a year earlier. His playing time had already tailed off; his final major league appearance came on October 3, 1964, so the 1965 issue arrived as his career in the majors was ending. The card documents his brief run with the club rather than any fresh season of work, closing out his run of Topps issues from the Houston franchise's early 1960s rosters.
Larry Yellen was a right-handed pitcher born January 4, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York. He reached the majors with the Houston Colt .45's, making his debut on September 26, 1963. Over parts of two seasons, 1963 and 1964, he appeared in 14 games, all but two of them in relief, working 26 innings and striking out 12 batters. He also came to the plate five times as a batter without recording a hit. His final major league game came on October 3, 1964, closing out a brief big-league career spent entirely with the Houston franchise. Standing 5 feet 11 inches and listed at 190 pounds, Yellen was one of a small number of Jewish players to appear in the majors during the era. After his playing days he lived to age 80, passing away on July 18, 2023.
