1965 Topps #31 Mike White
Pennant artwork reads simply Houston, reflecting the club's Colt .45s-to-Astros rebrand.

About Mike White
By the time this card appeared, the club had dropped the Colt .45s identity and was playing as the Houston Astros, and White's role had shrunk to mostly pinch-hitting duty; he went hitless in nine at-bats over eight games in 1965 before heading back to the minors. Card #31, from Topps' first series, marks the franchise's rebrand with pennant artwork reading simply Houston rather than naming either the old or new team identity.
Joyner Michael White was an outfielder and infielder who reached the majors with the Houston Colt .45s and Astros across three seasons, 1963 to 1965. The son of longtime major league outfielder and coach Jo-Jo White, he signed with the Cleveland organization in 1958 but nearly saw his career end that same year when a serious knee injury in an intrasquad game left him with a lasting limp. He pushed through years of therapy and minor league ball at third base before moving to the outfield and later second base, and when Cleveland released him after the 1960 season he caught on with the Los Angeles Angels system and then the expansion Colt .45s. Strong seasons in the high minors earned him a September 1963 call-up. His fullest big league season came in 1964, when he played the bulk of the year as Houston's center fielder and hit .271. He appeared in only eight games in 1965 before returning to the minor leagues, where he played into 1969. He was never selected to an All-Star team, won no major awards, and is not a Hall of Fame inductee.
