About Lum Harris
This card catches Harris in his first full season managing the Houston Astros, the club's debut year in the newly opened Astrodome. He had been promoted from coach to skipper in September 1964, succeeding Harry Craft, and led the re-christened Astros to a 65-97, ninth-place finish in the National League. It was his second big-league managing assignment after a 17-10 stint finishing out 1961 in Baltimore.
Chalmer Luman Harris, known as Lum, was a right-handed pitcher who spent six seasons in the majors with the Philadelphia Athletics (1941-1944, 1946) and Washington Senators (1947), compiling a 35-63 record. He missed 1945 while serving in the Navy during World War II. After his playing career wound down in the minors, Harris became a longtime coach and confidant of manager Paul Richards, following him to the Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and Houston Colt .45s as a third-base coach. He got his first managerial chance late in 1961, guiding the Orioles to a 17-10 finish, then took over the Houston Colt .45s in September 1964 and managed the club through its 1965 rebrand as the Astros. He later managed the Atlanta Braves from 1968 into 1972, leading them to the first National League West Division title in 1969 before falling to the Mets in the NLCS.
