About this card

Cards #1-12 are the League Leaders subset: twelve cards listing the 1964 leaders in six categories - batting average, home runs, runs batted in, earned run average, pitching and strikeouts - the American League card first and the National League card second in each pair.

The story on this card

1965 Topps #5 gathers the four men who drove in the most runs in the American League during 1964. Brooks Robinson led with 118 RBI for the Orioles, backing a .317 average and 28 home runs. Dick Stuart drove in 114 for the Red Sox, not far off the 117 he piled up for the Pirates in his best season there. Mickey Mantle and Harmon Killebrew tied for third with 111 RBI each, Mantle reaching the mark in 143 games for the Yankees and Killebrew doing it for the Twins. The card catches the league's top sluggers on the eve of 1965: Robinson the reigning MVP and Gold Glove third baseman, Mantle still hitting for power late in his career, Killebrew the game's premier long-ball threat, and Stuart better known for his bat than his glove.

Brooks Robinson manned third base for the Baltimore Orioles across 23 seasons, redefining the position with 16 straight Gold Gloves, the 1964 AL MVP award, and the show-stopping glovework that made him MVP of the 1970 World Series. A powerful but famously error-prone first baseman known as Dr. Strangeglove, Stuart won a title with the 1960 Pirates and led the American League in RBIs in 1963. Mickey Mantle was the Yankees' switch-hitting center fielder across 18 seasons, a Triple Crown winner, three-time American League Most Valuable Player and seven-time World Series champion who hit 536 home runs on ruined legs. Harmon Killebrew was the Twins' quiet, powerfully built slugger of the 1960s, a six-time American League home run champion who hit more homers in the decade than anyone else and won the 1969 AL Most Valuable Player award.
