About Mike Shannon

Shannon held the right-field job through 1965 but struggled at the plate, batting .221, and late in the year began learning to catch in emergencies to add to his versatility. Card #43 comes from the first series of the 1965 set and carries his name printed in red, a color choice unique to his card among the Cardinals in the set.

Thomas Michael Shannon grew up in St. Louis and starred in three sports at Christian Brothers College High School before signing with his hometown Cardinals in 1958 for a bonus close to fifty thousand dollars. He debuted in the majors in September 1962 and spent nine seasons with St. Louis, breaking through as the everyday right fielder in 1964 before shifting to third base in 1967 to open right field for Roger Maris. A rifle-armed defender with a line-drive bat, he reached three World Series with the Cardinals, winning in 1964 and 1967. A kidney ailment ended his playing career during the 1970 season, but Shannon went on to a decades-long run as the Cardinals' radio broadcaster, becoming one of the most familiar voices in St. Louis sports history.
