The story on this card
Dowling's 1965 Topps card is card 116, a Rookie Stars issue in the set's second series. It is his rookie card, shared with Bob Tolan, both pictured as Cardinals. The back reflects his 1964 rookie season, when St. Louis recalled him in September and used him for a single relief outing against the Mets in the next-to-last game of the year, days before the Cardinals clinched the pennant and went on to win the World Series. A left-handed pitcher out of Chehalis, Washington who reached the majors in just two games, with St. Louis in 1964 and the Cubs in 1966, before a shoulder injury ended his career.
1965 Topps #116 is a Rookie Stars card shared with fellow Cardinals farmhand Dave Dowling, part of the set's second print series. Tolan made his major league debut with St. Louis on September 3 of that year, appearing in 17 games as a September call-up while the Cardinals were still building the outfield depth that would carry them to the pennant two years later. A speedy left-handed outfielder who blossomed into an everyday center fielder with Cincinnati's Big Red Machine after years as a Cardinals reserve, leading the National League in stolen bases in 1970.
