1965 Topps #115 Bobby Richardson

About Bobby Richardson
This second-series card, #115, follows the 1964 season. Richardson led the league with 679 at bats, ranked third with 181 hits, batted .267 and took his fourth Gold Glove; on June 12 he collected his 1,000th hit, against the White Sox. In the World Series against St. Louis he piled up 13 hits and batted .406, seven of those hits off Bob Gibson, and the 13 are still a record for a seven-game Series - though Richardson always remembered instead the two errors he made, in a Series the Yankees lost in seven.
Bobby Richardson was a second baseman who spent his entire twelve-year career with the New York Yankees, from 1955 through 1966. He signed out of Edmunds High School in Sumter, South Carolina, on the day he graduated, and broke in as a light-hitting reserve behind Billy Martin, Gil McDougald and Jerry Coleman before settling in as the regular second baseman in 1959, the year he hit .301. He teamed with shortstop Tony Kubek and third baseman Clete Boyer to form one of the sharpest infields of the era, winning five straight Gold Gloves from 1961 through 1965. A contact hitter who almost never struck out - 243 times in twelve seasons - he led the American League in at bats three times and in hits once, with 209 in 1962. He was an eight-time All-Star and played in seven World Series, batting .305 in them, and in 1960 he became the only World Series MVP ever chosen from the losing team, driving in a record twelve runs, six of them in a single game. He retired after the 1966 season, still only 31, to spend more time with his family, and later coached college baseball at South Carolina, Coastal Carolina and Liberty.
