About this card

Cards #132-139 tell the 1964 World Series game by game - the Cardinals over the Yankees in seven - and close with "The Cards Celebrate".

The story on this card

Card 136 belongs to the World Series subset in the 1965 Topps set's second print series, revisiting the tenth-inning finish of Game 5 at Yankee Stadium the previous October. Bob Gibson's 2-0 lead vanished in the ninth when Tom Tresh's two-out homer tied the score, sending the game to extra innings. In the tenth, with two runners on, Yankees manager Yogi Berra stayed with right-hander Pete Mikkelsen rather than call on a lefty reliever, and Cardinals catcher Tim McCarver, pictured on the card, drove a three-run home run into the seats. The blast put St. Louis ahead 5-2, and Gibson held on for the win, sending the Series back home with the Cardinals up three games to two; two games later they beat the Yankees to take the title. McCarver, 22, batted .478 for the Series with 11 hits.
